Getting to Angoulême
Angoulême is exceptionally well connected: the TGV links Paris in around 2 hours and Bordeaux in 35 minutes, the A10 motorway passes just a few kilometres away, and the airports of Bordeaux-Mérignac and Limoges complete the picture. Here is every way to reach the Charentais capital.
By train — the main gateway
Angoulême station (place de la Gare, 16000) is a TGV stop on the LGV Sud Europe Atlantique, opened in 2017, which brought Paris down to just under two hours. Ouigo, TGV Inoui and Intercités trains serve it daily from Paris-Montparnasse. From Bordeaux-Saint-Jean, the journey takes just 35 minutes — making Angoulême a very convenient satellite of the Gironde metropolis for commuters and visitors alike. From Poitiers, allow around 40 minutes; from La Rochelle, around 1 h 20.
The station sits in the L'Houmeau district, in the lower town, about 1 km on foot from the upper town. Möbius network buses regularly connect the station to the plateau. Taxis are available outside the station at all hours. It is advisable to book TGV tickets in advance on SNCF Connect to get the best fares, particularly Ouigo trains which can be under €20.
Journey times from key cities
| Departure city | Train (approx.) | Car (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Paris-Montparnasse | ~2 h | ~4 h 30 |
| Bordeaux-Saint-Jean | ~35 min | ~1 h 10 |
| Poitiers | ~40 min | ~1 h |
| La Rochelle | ~1 h 20 | ~1 h 30 |
| Périgueux | ~1 h 15 | ~1 h |
| Limoges | ~1 h 30 | ~1 h 20 |
| Cognac | ~20 min (regional) | ~35 min |
By car — the A10 motorway
The A10 motorway (Paris–Bordeaux) is the main road spine of the corridor. The nearest junction for Angoulême city centre is exit 34 (Angoulême Nord), around 6 km from the centre. A second junction, exit 35 (Angoulême Sud), serves the southern part of the agglomeration. From Paris (Porte d'Orléans), allow around 4 h 30 non-stop. From Bordeaux, around 1 h 10 on the same motorway, then the N10 or D939.
For visitors arriving by car, the recommended strategy is to park in the lower town — notably at the Champ de Mars or L'Houmeau car parks — then walk or take a bus up to the plateau. Parking is easier and cheaper on the outskirts; in the upper town streets are often narrow and spaces limited. Free car parks exist along the edge of the plateau, near the ramparts.
By air — the nearest airports
There is no commercial airport in Angoulême itself. The three nearest airports are:
- Bordeaux-Mérignac (BOD) — around 1 h 15 by car, with direct flights to Paris, Lyon, Nantes, London, Amsterdam, Madrid and many European destinations. The best-connected option.
- Limoges - Bellegarde (LIG) — around 1 h 20 to the north-east, with regional flights and some connections to the British Isles.
- Poitiers - Biard (PIS) — around 1 hour to the north, with seasonal services and limited regional connections.
From Bordeaux-Mérignac, car hire is the most flexible option. There is no direct public transport link between that airport and Angoulême — the simplest route is the tram-bus to Bordeaux-Saint-Jean, then the TGV to Angoulême.
By long-distance coach
FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus coaches serve Angoulême on the Paris–Bordeaux corridor, stopping at the bus station or near the SNCF station. Journeys are longer than the TGV (around 4 to 5 hours from Paris) but significantly cheaper, often around €10–20. This is a popular option for students and budget travellers.
Regional coaches of the Charentes-Périgord network (TransPérigord, Limocar, etc.) also connect Angoulême to Périgueux, Cognac, Saintes, Barbezieux and other communes in the department. These lines are useful for exploring the Charentais hinterland without a car.
