Parks & gardens in Angoulême

Perched on its limestone plateau, Angoulême offers plenty of green breathing spaces: public gardens below the ramparts, panoramic terraces, family parks by the Charente. Ideal spots for a shady stroll between visits to the upper town.

The Jardin Vert, the plateau's green lung

The Jardin Vert is Angoulême's largest public green space. Nestled below the western ramparts, it stretches across several hectares of lawns, flower beds and shaded paths. Accessible from Place Beaulieu or via the staircases descending from the rampart walk, it makes a pleasant stop after touring the ramparts. Benches, flowered baskets and some notable trees — limes, horse-chestnuts — create a relaxing setting for reading, picnicking or letting children run free. Admission is free and permanent.

The town-hall gardens

Behind the Hôtel de Ville, whose medieval Lusignan and Valois towers dominate the façade, lies a more intimate formal garden. Adorned with geometric flower beds and clipped box hedges, it is accessible from the inner courtyard during opening hours. This garden offers a pleasant contrast to the imposing Renaissance and Gothic architecture of the municipal building. Visitors can enjoy the cool here after seeing Saint-Pierre cathedral, just a few hundred metres away. Ideal for photography thanks to the perspectives on the medieval towers.

The Beaulieu terrace and rampart gardens

The Beaulieu terrace is arguably Angoulême's most spectacular viewpoint. Set on the southern flank of the promontory, it offers a breathtaking panorama over the Charente valley, the wooded slopes of the opposite bank and, on clear days, as far as the edge of the department. Terraced gardens line the southern rampart along its full length: rose beds, Mediterranean species and aromatic plants grow in the crevices of the medieval walls. It is also one of the starting points for the ramparts walking circuit, which completes a full loop of the plateau in approximately 2.5 km.

Parks and family spaces

Beyond the plateau, several parks welcome families and sports enthusiasts. The banks of the Charente, accessible from the Saint-Cybard district, offer riverside pathways with children's play equipment and picnic areas. The plaine des Tricheries, in the northern district, is a large green space serving as an urban park with sports ground, play area and fitness trail. Place du Champ de Mars, in the upper town, provides benches and lawns for a breather between museums. Finally, the Parc Vert-Galant, in the Basseau neighbourhood, is popular with families with young children thanks to its outdoor equipment.

Urban nature: what the city tends

Angoulême has been pursuing a progressive greening policy for its streets and squares for several years. Flower troughs and planters dress the old town's streets, and some inner courtyards of the historic quarter have been turned into shared gardens. The city also participates in the 'Villes et Villages Fleuris' scheme, with municipally maintained seasonal beds. For botany enthusiasts, several remarkable specimens are catalogued: a century-old magnolia near the town hall, wisteria adorning the façades of rue Marengo, and several classified plane trees along the northern ramparts.

Angoulême's green spaces sit within a broader natural environment: a few kilometres from the centre, the Braconne forest, one of the largest forests in Poitou-Charentes, offers hiking trails and leisure areas. The Charente river, winding at the foot of the promontory, is a precious ecological corridor, frequented by grey herons, kingfishers and, in season, colonies of sand martins. The greenways allow access on foot or by bike to these natural spaces from the heart of the city.
