Weather in Angoulême: when to visit and what to pack

Under its temperate oceanic climate, Angoulême can be visited in every season. The mild, sunny summers attract visitors from May to September, but late January remains a must for comics lovers — despite often brisk cold — with the usual timing of the comics festival.

Spring (March–May): the fine season begins

Spring in Angoulême is a pleasant transitional season. March remains unpredictable — alternating fine days at 15–17 °C with cool spells below 10 °C — but April and May bring mild temperatures, growing sunshine and the first warmth. Rainfall is still present, often as brief showers rather than lasting rain, and vegetation returns abundantly.

What to pack: a light waterproof or windbreaker, layerable clothing (t-shirt + jumper + light jacket), comfortable shoes for the cobblestones of the upper town. In May, the terraces of the cafés liven up and it is pleasant to linger in the evening on the ramparts.

Summer (June–August): the peak tourist season

Summer is the most pleasant season for visiting Angoulême. Maximum temperatures generally range between 24 and 28 °C in July–August, with cool nights (13–16 °C) that make evenings pleasant. Sunshine is generous, with often clear days from June. Summer rainfall is low and falls mainly as afternoon thunderstorms, which refresh without disrupting plans.

What to pack: light clothing, sun protection (cream, hat), a reusable water bottle — the limestone of the upper town absorbs heat. During heatwaves, air-conditioned museums such as the Cité de la BD offer a welcome refuge. Also pack a light jacket for evenings.

Autumn (September–November): mildness and events

Early autumn, in September and October, is often one of the year's most beautiful periods: still mild temperatures (16–21 °C by day), often clear skies, and foliage colouring in the parks and along the Charente. It is also the season of the Circuit des Remparts, the historic motor race that takes place each third weekend of September in the streets of the upper town, drawing tens of thousands of spectators.

November sees the return of grey skies and rain: temperatures fall to around 10–14 °C by day and rainfall increases noticeably. What to pack: in September, summer clothes suffice by day; in October, add a jumper and waterproof jacket; November calls for a light coat and rain-resistant shoes.

Winter (December–February): mild but grey, and the comics festival

Angoulême's winter is characterised by relative mildness — negative temperatures are rare and snowfall exceptional — but also by often overcast skies and frequent rain. Winter maxima generally range between 8 and 10 °C, minima between 2 and 4 °C. Overnight frost is possible but rarely persistent.

The end of January is traditionally the liveliest time of the Angoulême winter: the International Comics Festival transforms the city into a global event. In 2026, the festival was cancelled following a governance dispute; the city instead organised a free event, 'Le Grand Off'. A festival revival is announced for 2027. If you plan to come for the festival, book well in advance: hotels fill up weeks before the opening.

What to pack in winter: a warm coat, scarf and light waterproof are essential. Festival days can be exhausting: bring comfortable and waterproof shoes, layer your clothing, and be prepared to walk several kilometres a day between the various exhibition venues.

When to visit: our recommendation

For a standard tourist visit, the months of May, June and September offer the best balance of mild weather, sunshine and manageable crowds. July–August are very pleasant but the busiest. Late January is for dedicated comics fans who want to immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of the city during the festival — in 2027, if the FIBD revival goes ahead as announced, the city will see its usual crowd of 200,000 visitors over four days.

Also worth noting: the Circuit des Remparts, each third weekend of September, creates an exceptional festive atmosphere in the upper town: historic car and motorcycle races through the city-centre streets, concerts and entertainment. It is one of Angoulême's most popular events, drawing tens of thousands of spectators from across the south-west.
